Agri Vikas, the Agriculture Conclave has been hosted by Argus News for the last three years, which have had a reasonable impact. The very first edition of the Conclave in 2022, dealt with challenges and opportunities arising out of transformation of the agriculture sector in Odisha. In 2023, the Conclave concentrated on leveraging the agriculture sector through Cooperatives in Odisha. This was followed by the Conclave in 2024 the thrust of which was smart and sustainable agriculture eco-system in Odisha.

Indian Agriculture - The Road Ahead

The Indian agriculture sector is poised to take-off with specific programs and initiatives and unveil a better tomorrow. With the Government striving to boost agricultural production, enhance productivity, and improve farmers’ livelihoods by addressing critical challenges and fostering sustainable development through innovative practices and supportive measures. The thrust is to move from conventional methods to modern technology. Despite the decline of the share of agriculture in India's GDP to 15 per cent last fiscal year from 35 per cent in 1990-91 it remains the leader in employment. Its share in employment was 44.1 per cent in 2017-18, which has increased to 46.1 per cent in 2023-24.

Agriculture in Odisha: The Landscape

Agriculture in Odisha is undergoing a transformation which is being driven by innovative technologies, enhanced irrigation, and financial assistance. Global agricultural practices are being localised through institutional research and policy coherence. Agriculture in Odisha is slated to become the source of prosperity and well-being in the state. As an effort to strengthen the welfare of farmers, the Government has taken special care that they are covered by various schemes. The Government has initiated the process of procurement of paddy from farmers. Further, the priority is on Crop Diversification focussing on pulses, oilseeds, vegetables and high value crops.
